Wake up and choose your course
Updated: Aug 12
REFLECTION
Every morning gives us a choice.
We can wake up and simply react to whatever the day puts in front of us, or we can decide who we are going to be before the world starts making demands on us.
For a long time, I lived reactively. My circumstances, my emotions, other people, fear, addiction, success, failure—they all had more influence over the direction of my life than I did.
Recovery taught me something different.
Freedom requires participation.
At some point, we have to stop waiting for life to change and begin taking responsibility for the direction we are walking. We may not control everything that happens today, but we can choose how we meet it.
And sometimes an entire life begins changing with one honest decision made this morning.
SCRIPTURE
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”— Psalm 90:12
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Before the demands of the day take over, ask yourself:
What kind of person do I want to be today?
Not what do I need to accomplish.
Not what do I need other people to do.
Who do I want to be?
JUST FOR TODAY
Choose one quality you want to practice today—honesty, patience, courage, discipline, kindness, presence, or something else.
Identify one situation where that quality will probably be tested.
When that moment comes, pause before reacting.
Make the next right choice.
You don’t have to figure out the rest of your life today.
You just have to choose your course for today.
